2008 World Series of Poker Europe: £5,500 PLO - Day 1

It's time to raise the ante a bit, as the big boys and girls return to the Empire for Event 3 -- a £5,500 Pot Limit Omaha tournament scheduled to kick off today at 3:00 p.m. local time (10:00 a.m. EST). Essentially a $10k buy-in event, we've reached our second-to-last dot on the WSOPE schedule, as well as our second-to-largest.

The prizepool typically climbs high when the world's best Omaha players get together and we expect nothing less here today. Guys like Robert Williamson III, Dario Alioto and Marty Smyth who are known for their Omaha prowess should all be in attendance this afternoon, along with 'The Bear,' Barry Greenstein, Layne Flack and the always entertaining Phil Hellmuth.

Day 1 Hath Ended

Eight fast-paced hours of "Second Chance" Pot-Limit Omaha have come and gone, and just 45 of the 165 players who started the day will return tomorrow for Day 2.

Along the way we lost Omaha maestro David Benyamine, last year's Main Event winner Annette "Annette_15" Obrestad, and Event 2 final tablists Yuval Bronshtein and Phil Ivey.

Near the top of the leaderboard are pros Jason Mercier, David Williams, Alexander Kravchenko, and Sorel Mizzi, while your unofficial end-of-Day 1 overnight chip leader is Shaun Deeb.

Kravchenko Moscow Home on the bubble

\"We have an all-in!\" exclaimed Joe Beevers as he alerted the rest of the room.

Alex Kravchenko =
Ilkka Koskinen =

Flop =

\"Flush draw,\" observed another player, not exactly easing the tension on Kravchenko.

Turn =

The Russian held his breath...

River =

\"Sick,\" concluded various players in unison.

Allen Cunningham Eliminated in 16th Place (£14,438)

Theo Jorgensen raised it up to 11,000, Allen Cunningham made it 39,000 and Jorgensen made the call.

On a flop, Jorgensen check-raised Cunningham all in and we had a showdown with Jorgensen in dominating shape with versus Cunningham\'s .

The American\'s luck failed to turn, and with the turn and river bricking out, Cunningham quietly slipped away as the table could but look on in awe.

A clearly fearless Jorgensen now has around 470,000 in chips and a stack that would make Buckingham Palace look small.

Joe Beevers Eliminated in 12th Place (£18,562)

The Table of Doom and Certain Death continues to wield it\'s eliminating stick with the departure of Hendon Mobber Joe Beevers. Again, all in preflop, Beevers ran into the of Jason Mercier, and was unable to summon the spirit of Houdini as the board came .

Beevers sensed the end was near as he commented, \"That\'s not good,\" on the turn, and his negative vibes were justified when the San Remo EPT champion made a straight on the river to add another scalp to his already impressive poker CV.

Neil Channing Eliminated in 11th Place (£18,562)

Neil Channing became the final table bubble boy just moments ago after clashing, unsuccessfully so, with young Finn Tomi Nyback. I didn\'t catch how the hand played out, but all the chips went flying in on a flop with Nyback\'s for two pair leading against Channing\'s for top pair with the straight draw.

But none of Channing\'s outs arrived, the turn followed by the river, merely giving his foe a stronger two pair than he held previously. \"Alright,\" said Channing in defeat. \"Well played.\"

\"You can\'t bluff anyone under the age of 22,\" added Max Pescatori in the aftermath.

\"Yeah, I should have known from the Beevers hand,\" concluded Channing.

There will now be one last redraw with the remaining 10 players combining to form one table.

Day 2 Concludes

Forty-five players returned for Day 2 of the £5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event and on our way to the final nine, we saw many of the game's best hit the rail -- Allen Cunningham, Joe Beevers, Shaun Deeb, Mike "Timex" McDonald, Erik Seidel, and Andy Bloch just to name a few.

Coming into final table play as the dominant chip leader is Copenhagen's Theo Jorgensen, who took out tenth-place finisher Ilkka Koskinen to build his stack to nearly 900,000 on what would be the final hand of the night. Behind him is EPT San Remo champion Jason Mercier with 650,000. Everyone's favorite Italian Pirate Max Pescatori is riding the short stack with 126,000.

Jason Mercier Eliminated in 8th Place (£26,812)

With just under 100,000 in the middle and a lying patiently on the felt, Jason Mercier found himself all in for around 115,000 with against the of Theo Jorgensen.

With Mercier looming over the table, his breath held, the turn came a most welcome to give him a straight to the jack. Mercier clenched his fist in silent celebration, but the fat lady wasn\'t singing just yet, as the board could still pair to give the Dane the pot.

The board may have paired, but it was the that hit to give Jorgensen quad aces and send the young American out in eighth. One again, the poker gods display their teasing ways.

Chris Ferguson Eliminated in 7th Place (£33,000)

No one hits quads like Theo Jorgensen hits quads.

Chris Ferguson got his entire stack in on a flop of and Theo Jorgensen made the call.

Ferguson

Jorgensen

Jorgensen flopped a set of sixes, but Ferguson was in good shape with the nut flush draw and a straight draw. The turn, though, was a total disaster for Ferguson as the landed, making Jorgensen quads yet again. The inconsequential fell on the river and Jesus hit the rail in seventh place, collecting £33,000 for his efforts today.

David Penly Eliminated in 6th Place (£41,250)

With Italian Pirate Max Pescatori making it 41,000 preflop, big blind David Penly took one quick glance at his cards before announcing, \"All in,\" and sliding an extra 150,000 across the felt. Pescatori called quicker than a pack of dogs on a three-legged cat.

Pescatori =
Penly =

The flop must have affected Penly\'s bowel movements no end, and by the turn, he was drawing dead, as Pescatori had made a king-high straight. A river was therefore academic, and Penly was sent crashing out in sixth.

Max Pescatori Eliminated in 5th Place (£51,562)

With the board reading on the river, Max Pescatori bet 50,000, and Erik Friberg raised to 200,000. Pescatori made the call, turning up -X-X for a turned set of kings, but that same card had made Friberg the nut straight with . Pescatori was left with only 19,000 after the hand.

On the next deal Pescatori limped in and was joined by Sorel Mizzi in the small blind and Theo Jorgensen in the big. The flop was . The action was checked to Pescatori, who moved all in for his remaining 7,000 in chips. Both Mizzi and Jorgensen called, and they checked down the on the turn and the on the river.

Jorgensen showed for a pair of tens. Pescatori could only manage a pair of nines and Mizzi mucked his hand. Jorgensen dragged the pot and Pescatori was eliminated, his fifth-place finish earning him £51,562.

As he greeted his friend John Phan, who was swilling champagne on the rail, Pescatori quipped, \"As soon as they give me the (money), I\'ll bet it all on red!\"

Erik Friberg Eliminated in 4th Place (£66,000)

With the Empire Casino packed to the rafters from the hustle and bustle of the Friday night crowd, Sorel Mizzi and Erik Friberg saw a cheap flop.

After Mizzi had called a bet of 20,000, Friberg fired out again on the turn, this time to the tune of 60,000. Mizzi glanced back down at his cards before announcing, \"Raise,\" and pushing two columns of 100,000 over the line. Friberg called all in, and we had a showdown.

With Friberg\'s up against , the Swede had his nose in front but was looking to avoid any spade, a deuce, a king, or a five (don\'t quote me on that, it\'s late). Much to the delight of the Mizzilites on the rail, two of those outs were rolled into one as the dealer duly dealt out a clinical on the river.

Eric Dalby Eliminated in 3rd Place (£84,562)

Sorel Mizzi opened for 49,000 from the button, Theo Jorgensen called from the small blind and Eric Dalby called from the big. The flop was . Jorgensen checked, Dalby bet 147,000, Mizzi got out of the way and Jorgensen called. The turn was the . Jorgensen led out for 270,000, Dalby re-potted all in and Jorgensen insta-called.

Jorgensen turned over for the nut straight, Dalby drawing dead with . The river was the and the affable Englishman was eliminated. He\'ll collect £ 84,562 for his finish here today.

Heads-Up Play Commences

With reveling cocktailers, clinking glasses, a rail full of rambunctious Mizzi and Jorgensen supporters and the ever-present thump of electronica spilling out from the upstairs nightclub, heads-up play has commenced at what might be the noisiest final table in WSOP history.

Jorgensen has nearly a 3-to-1 chip lead over Mizzi as they get down to business.

Theo Jorgensen Wins Event #58 (£218,626), Sorel Mizzi Eliminated in 2nd Place (£132,000)

After what was quickly becoming an adrenalin-pumping roller coaster of a ride, we finally unearthed our champion, and thus the winner of the resplendent gold bracelet.

It all happened on a flop, and in a matter of seconds too. Jorgensen bet 100,000, Mizzi reraised, Jorgensen pushed all in, Mizzi called and we had our showdown.

Jorgensen = for top set.
Mizzi = for the nut flush draw.

\"Heart!\" yelled a slightly intoxicated Annette Obrestad from the rail. \"Seven of diamonds!\" exclaimed another. \"Pair the f***ing board!\" screamed Jorgensen, refusing to mince his words.

In the end, it was the second of those requests that mysteriously came true, the blank turn being followed by a harmless river, delivered straight from the Twilight Zone.

\"Woooooooo!\" screeched Jorgensen as the collective shoulders of Mizzi and his Mizzilites dropped in unison. With a battered and bruised Mizzi staring dejectedly down at the felt, the jubilant victor jumped into the arms of fellow countryman Martin Vallo and the two Danes proceeded to celebrate their nation\'s second triumph of the week. An incredible feat, and one that will have the North Americans turning green with envy.
