Event #52 - $1,500 No Limit Hold'em

Monday No-Limit at the Rio

Preliminary events are winding down for the 2008 World Series of Poker, but this final Monday before the Main Event brings another seams-bursting tourney at the Rio. It's Event 52, $1,500 No-Limit, the last of a handful of the popular $1,500 NLHE events on the 2008 WSOP schedule.

This one gets underway at noon, and promises to overflow the Amazon Room and surrounding environs.

Play Concludes For the Evening

The clock has just expired on round 10 which means play has concluded for the day. What started as a mob of 2,693 hopefuls stretched throughout the various rooms and overflow areas here at the Rio is now just 228 players in the far corner of the Amazon Room.

We saw a lot of big names go out today. Antonio Esfandiari, Chris Moneymaker, Jennifer Tilly and Shannon Shorr just to name a few. Still alive are Mimi Tran, Vanessa Rousso, Matt Matros and a handful of other notables.

Alvin Zeidenfeld ends the day as our probable chip leader with about 157,000. Andes Fraulund and Elliot Smith are not far behind however, both with over 100,000.

We hope you'll join us for day 2 action which starts tomorrow at 2 p.m. PDT from the nearby Brasilia room. The 228 remaining players will play down to the final nine that will comprise Tuesday's final table.

So....That IS It

It looked for a time like we might play deep into the night before our final table was set, but as so often happens the final knockouts came back-to-back and we're down to our final nine. The players will reconvene at 2pm tomorrow at the ESPN Final Table and we'll see who wins the $625,443 first prize and the coveted World Series of Poker bracelet.

Congratulations to David Daneshgar, Event No. 52 Champion ($625,443)

David Daneshgar has negotiated his way through a field of nearly 2,700 to land his first WSOP bracelet, winning Event No. 52, a $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em event, after coming from behind against Scott Sitron.

Sitron played well tonight. He entered play one of the table's short stacks (8th in chips), but picked up pocket queens on the third hand of the night and after doubling up there picked his spots carefully, eventually assuming the chip lead.

When play got down to three-handed, Sitron, Daneshgar, and eventual third-place finisher Dan Heimiller traded the lead back and forth until Sitron finally took out a short-stacked Heimiller when his A-10 outlasted Heimiller's A-3.

When heads up play began, Sitron enjoyed close to a 2-to-1 chip advantage over Daneshgar. During the fifty hands of heads up, Daneshgar received several big hands -- aces twice, kings -- but Sitron kept folding to Daneshgar's preflop raises. After about 30 hands, the tide turned when Daneshgar took a big pot without a showdown, then in the 50th hand of heads up, Daneshgar's pocket tens carried the day.

"It feels great to win my first one," he said afterwards. "I'm hoping to win my next one in about two weeks... plus three months, to make it back-to-back bracelets."

Congratulations to Daneshgar, who takes home $625,443 and a gold bracelet.
