Event #49 - $1,500 No Limit Hold'em

A $1,500 No-Limit Saturday...

... is again on tap at the World Series of Poker. The last Saturday prior to the Main Event itself promises to have the Rio Convention Center bulging at its seams. Space considerations will keep the total number of entrants lower than last year's 3,151, which ultimately resulted in Chandrasekhar Billavara taking home a $722,914 first-place prize. It's also the next-to-last $1,500 no-limit event on the '08 WSOP schedule.

The frenzy begins at noon, in the Amazon, Tropical and Brasilia Rooms, adjacent to Buzio's Restaurant, and even in the Rio's own poker room. It'll be a busy day at the WSOP.

Phil Hellmuth Eliminated

Shortly after being dropped down to just 225 in chips, Phil Hellmuth managed to double up and double up again. In fact, he was up to 1,400 just four hands after being short-stacked.

However, Phil has had a hard time winning races today. He claims to have dodged the pocket aces earlier, then got shorted against pocket queens. His elimination came after going all in against a player while holding A-K. His opponent held pocket eights, which held up, and Phil was eliminated.

Gazes Gone

Christoph Köhnen raised to 25,000 from middle position, and Paul Kim called from the cutoff. Kristy Gazes then raised all in for 37,500 from the button. Both Köhnen and Kim called.

The flop came , and Köhnen bet 30,000. \"Really? Really?\" asked Kim, indicating his incredulity at Köhnen having bet into the dry side pot. Kim folded.

Köhnen showed for top pair. Gazes had for two pair.

The turn was the and Gazes was still in front. But the turn was the , giving Köhnen Broadway and sending Gazes to the rail.

Köhnen is up to 225,000.

Anderson Silva Eliminated in 10th Place ($36,729)

On the previous hand, Anderson Silva had limped from early position, then folded to a J.C. Tran raise behind. Silva then limped in again, and John Conroy, who hadn\'t been playing many pots, raised to 75,000.

It folded around to Rasmus Nielsen who looked back and forth between Conroy and Silva, then asked how much each had behind. Silva had about 520,000, and Conroy about 600,000. Nielsen -- having both covered three times over -- then announced he was all in.

Silva called, and Conroy folded, showing pocket tens as he did.

Silva
Nielsen

Aces versus kings. Usually a pretty reliable formula for bursting a final table bubble.

The flop came , and Nielsen\'s lead became even more commanding. The came on the turn. And the on the river sealed it. Silva is out in 10th place. Nielsen enters tomorrow\'s final table the commanding chip leader with approximately 2.6 million.

Interesting Facts

We managed to go nine hands without seeing a flop, and on the tenth hand, John Conroy led out for 155,000 and JC Tran called. After seeing the flop, Conroy checked and Tran led out for 140,000 and John folded.

Joe Pelton has been all in three times over the last fifteen hands and has yet to be called. Peter Nguyen has been all in three times and also has yet to be called.

We lost four players within the first hour and a half of play, but since we've been at five players remaining, we've yet to lose another. We have had several all-ins with no calls.

Congratulations to J.C. Tran - Champion of Event #49 ($631,170)

Things have come to a close here at the ESPN Final table. Rasmus Nielsen, who at one point had a 6:1 chip lead over the remaining players has taken second place and took home $389,557 for his three days of work.

J.C. Tran continues to have an amazing run here at the World Series of Poker. Tran came in to the final table with second in chips and the two of these players duked it out for the majority of the day. Once the heads up battle began, Tran slowly started to inch his way out into the lead. After more than seventy hands heads up, Tran took first place, netting $631,170 for his work as well his first WSOP gold bracelet.
