Event #46 - $5,000 No Limit Hold'em Six-handed

$5,000 No-Limit Six-Handed Begins at Noon

It's a noon start on Thursday for Event 46 on the 2008 WSOP schedule, $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em Six-Handed. The format is tailor-made for aggressive play and the very best short-handed specialists in the game will be on hand to battle this one out.

In 2007, Bill "The Stunning One" Edler triumphed over a 728-player field to win $904,672 and the bracelet. Edler's win was a popular one within the poker world, and helped launch a career year for Edler himself, who within months went on to several more wins and significant cashes in major poker events.

The river was the and it checked to Laak. Laak tossed out a 5,000 chip and said, \"Thirty-sixty.\" The player quickly folded and Laak raked the pot.

The Phil Laak Comedy Show

Phil Laak has really been amusing his table. The flop was 10-4-2 and he showed A-8 after his opponent bet. Laak then commented, "I haven't folded yet! Well, I fold now that he's seen it."

A few hands later, Laak struck up this conversation.

"In his book, Gus [Hansen] says how he folded deuce-seven. Nine hands later [Gus] says 'I folded deuce-seven nine hands ago and was getting 4.6-1,' and that he was unhappy." The whole table laughed.

Phil Hellmuth In'n'Out

Phil Hellmuth, in classic Phil Hellmuth form, arrived two hours late to the tournament. He then proceeded to play one hand, flopped a pair and a flush draw, missed and stormed out, saying, "How the *bleep* am I gonna hit a hand?!"

End of Day 1

It took more than 15 hours, but we've finally established the final table for Event No. 46, the $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em Short-Handed event. Five of the six who made it -- Joe Commisso, Samuel Trickett, Tom Lutz, Edward Ochana, and current chip leader Richard Lyndaker -- held the chip lead at some point during the latter stages of today's play. And our sixth player, Davidi Kitai, will be gunning for his second WSOP bracelet this summer after having won Event No. 38, the $2,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em event, less than a week ago.

Congratulations to Joe Commisso, Champion of Event No. 46 ($911,855)

After a wild first three hours which saw four of our six players eliminated within 69 hands, Joe Commisso and Richard Lyndaker then commenced a nearly six-hour long heads up battle, encompassing 209 hands total.

Commisso enjoyed a 2-to-1 chip advantage when heads up play began, and he maintained his lead for the first half of the pair's epic conflict. They traded the lead back and forth a few times, then after 180 hands and five hours of heads up both players, apparently fatigued, began shoving all in more and more often.

While Lyndaker had to survive many all ins, it was Commisso who needed to hit his open-ended straight draw on Hand No. 276 to stay alive. Two hands later, it was over, and Joe Commisso wins the largest cash prize to date in this year's WSOP -- a cool $911,855.

Congratulations to Joe Commisso, the $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em Short-Handed champ!
